Newest 2020 will not run .. no errors
« on: June 02, 2020, 04:39:50 AM »
My setup:
HP Z800 2x HexaCore Intel Xeon X5675, 3066 MHz (23 x 133)
96 GB ram
Windows 10 pro (uptodate)

I've been using the last 2019 version for several weeks on a newish install on the above mentioned hardware and software.
Prior experience with Imatch of several years (began with 3.6) and have used assorted versions prior to the new install.

Did not notice any problems, other than my lack of skill with the software, when using 2019 on this newish setup.

Now, updated to the latest licensed 2020 release, after installation (with seeming no problems) When I attempt to start from the desktop icon, the pointer shows busy for a moment (maybe a second), then asks permission to alter the os, (`ok' that message) and then nothing whatever happens.
No errors are shown.  It simply does nothing whatever.  Everything else continues to work as normal.

I did try `start as admin' with no more success.
I did try a removal of Imatch 2020 using IObit uninstaller, reboot and re-install ... same thing happened.

I'm a bit lost how to even begin to debug this.

That would also be my guess.

The slightly changed hardware and software requirements for IMatch are announced in many places, from the release notes to the IMatch 2020 - What's New Page, the download page, the hardware & software requirements page and on the Upgrade Discount page in the customer portal.

Unfortunately, sometimes users overlook all that and when they also have a very old PC or a PC with a stripped-down Intel CPU, they cannot run IMatch 2020.

I don't think it has AVX:

Intel Xeon X5675 launched Q1 2011.
From http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon%20X5675%20-%20AT80614006696AA%20(BX80614X5675).html

These are the Extensions and Technologies:
MMX instructions
SSE / Streaming SIMD Extensions
SSE2 / Streaming SIMD Extensions 2
SSE3 / Streaming SIMD Extensions 3
SSSE3 / Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extensions 3
SSE4 / SSE4.1 + SSE4.2 / Streaming SIMD Extensions 4  ?
AES / Advanced Encryption Standard instructions
EM64T / Extended Memory 64 technology / Intel 64  ?
HT / Hyper-Threading technology  ?
VT-x / Virtualization technology  ?
VT-d / Virtualization for directed I/O
TBT / Turbo Boost technology  ?

BTW speccy is a great piece of software for finding details of all hardware: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

The free utility I provide on the page linked above tells you explicitly if your processor supports AVX or not.
It does not install background services or report data to anybody. It just checks the processor and tells you what's what.

I'm always wary about any kind of "cleaner" software.
Especially CC Cleaner products have a bad reputation (link).

Yup, that would be me.

No AVX shows up with an `OK' next to it.
GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           X5675  @ 3.07GHz
         AVX -
        AVX2 -
       3DNOW -
    3DNOWEXT -
         ABM -
         ADX -
         AES OK
    AVX512CD -
    AVX512ER -
     AVX512F -
    AVX512PF -
   [...]

Apparently there is nothing to be done that can add the AVX capability.

Well I'm sorry to say I guess I'll be looking for a refund.  But at least I can continue to use 2019.

I usually don't do refunds. See "Refunds Policy" on the shop page: https://www.photools.com/shop/
NO REFUNDS. Since photools.com is offering non-tangible irrevocable goods we do not issue refunds after the purchase is made, which you are responsible for understanding upon placing the order.

Refunds cost me a lot of money. I'm not a big company with massive cash flows.
The credit card company and the distribution company charge me for you purchase. And they charge me again for your refund.
Not only I loose a sale, but I loose maybe 20 $ because you have not read any of the information I have provided to you.
You can of course force a refund via you CC company, claiming that I have intentionally misguided or deceived you. Or that you have placed the order in error.

I made it very clear in at least five locations that support for AVX is required.
It's prominently mentioned in the "IMatch 2020 is here" email I have sent to all customers.
On the download page. The hardware & software requirements page: https://www.photools.com/hardware-software-requirements/
On the "IMatch 2020 - What's New" page : https://www.photools.com/imatch-2020-whats-new/
On the "Upgrading to IMatch 2020" page: https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#migrate_imatch2020.htm
And, VERY BIG on the upgrade discount page in the customer portal you have read and used to order your discounted upgrade.
I've announced this and we discussed this months before IMatch 2020 came out here in the community.

If your PC is so old or so special that it has no AVX (AVX is standard since around 2011 for almost all Intel and AMD processors), maybye consider upgrading your system to something more recent?
Or look for a drop-in replacement for your old Xeon CPUs with AVX support?

Well, talk of refunds was more gab than serious.  I'm good with looking at this as a donation toward the fine work you've done
for years, the same work that I have gotten considerable use out of for probably more than 5 yrs.

I doubt I'll be upgrading hardware any time soon as this server quality HP Z-800 is still fast and strong.

I just bought this server a bit over a month ago. It cost me $500, is about as handy as an anvil to move around, but is still quite powerful .

With  `System Memory    98288 MB (DDR3 SDRAM)'  and 2 Xeon cpu, It still has a lot of juice.
Not to mention that this Machine was itself an upgrade from HP xw8600  current in around 2008.

But sadly these Xeons have AVX disabled. Intel did that to meet certain price points, apparently.
I have no idea why they would do that for Xeons, which are Server/Workstation processors and thus expensive...

it's not that simple.
I don't think you can swap Westmere architecture chips for the AVX Sandy Bridge architecture. A replacement motherboard is required. (Hp Z 820 and higher use Sandy Bridge) . Sockets are different between the different architectures.

I gave up CCleaner a long time ago. I didn't like the way they touched the registry.
A useful URL, Mario.
I often use the products and use the techniques mentioned in that URL to keep my machine clean.

I avoid CCleaner at all times... it has a pretty bad rep.  Another freeware alternative I've been using for years is HWiNFO.. portable, fast and more PC info than you might ever need!

Damn, I've just upgraded to imatch 2020 (having been a iMatch user since 3.5) and have the same problem..

Probably my fault for not reading the hardware requirements, but I have never in my life before worried about having good enough hardware. My CPU is only 4 years old..

As I wrote above, the requirement for the decade-old AVX processor feature was communicated via this community since 2019!
The information is also prominently displayed on the IMatch 2020 - What's New page, the landing page for the emails sent out to IMatch 2019 customers over the past year, on the download and shop pages.
There is little else I can do, sorry.

Did you not try the IMatch 2020 trial if you are a new customer? Or if you have used a 10 year out of date version of IMatch, did you not give the current IMatch version a try before buying?

A four year old computer without support for AVX must either be a notebook using one of IntelÄs 'budget' CPU's (where they disable processor features) or a rare Intel Xeon Server/Workstation CPU which has no AVX (for reasons only known to Intel).
