Solved Bug Reports (for next version) / IMatch web site
Last post by cassb - May 07, 2025, 04:41:21 PM
Can I post errors I find on the IMatch web site here?  If not, please redirect this post to the proper forum.

I'm reading this page https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/index.html#md_for_beginners.htm and found the word 'uses' should probably be 'users'.

Common Metadata
Most uses enter at least a title, headline, copyright information, a description and some keywords for each image. In many environments, the title of the image is derived from the file name.

General Discussion and Questions / Re: 'Approximate' or 'Circa' D...

In my experience, schemes too complex rot over time.

Details are forgotten, no longer maintained properly, date portions kept in file names become out of sync with metadata, etc. All bad.

Using the standard XMP timestamps to record an approximate timestamp down to either half-year (6/1, 12/1) or quarter (1/1, 4/1, ...) stores a good enough timestamp where it belongs - in metadata.

This makes the Timeline, events, sorting, searching, and other time-based features in IMatch work as you would expect.

As mentioned above, the Circa Date Created is a text tag and can contain anything that works for you. From "About first half of 1879" to "Either August or September 1911" to "Unknown, used best approximate", all options are valid.

If you are consistent with this, you can use a non-empty Circa Date tag as an automatic indicator for files with uncertain dates. Two flies with one stone.

You can also use a category or collection ti mark files with uncertain dates, of course.

But I always prefer things to be automatic and no-brainers. The less chance I have to mess up or forget, the better. If Circa Date is used, IMatch can automatically take care of this for you.

Additionally, you can create a formula-based category (@MetadataTag) that includes all files with a non-empty Circa Date tag. Alternatively, you might build a data-driven category based on this tag to group images with the same value together.

IMatch stores XMP timestamps and Circa Date tags in your images or sidecars, ensuring they persist forever and remain accessible by all XMP-enabled software (which "supports" the Circa Date tag).
Unfortunately, even professional software often supports only a tiny subset of XMP—typically what they prefer to use. Ideally, such tools would follow the XMP standard and maintain unused or non visible tags.

If you must cater to the lowest common denominator and support applications or services with minimal metadata awareness (where CircaDate is not an option), you can achieve similar results using any XMP tag that isn't used for other purposes.

If you absolutely need this type of information in file names, use the Renamer.

You can rename files with the Renamer to include the XMP timestamp and Circa Date—even in specifically formatted forms, thanks to IMatch variables.

The beauty of this approach is that you can just run the Renamer again when you update the XMP timestamp and/or Circa Date after finding a "better" date. This ensures consistency and automates the process.

QuoteI have attached the Date Block portion of my file naming scheme
Nice write up, I have been using a date and time named based file naming scheme for years. For scanned pictures or digitized movie files I run into too many problems keeping everything up to date and abandoned the scheme. For many files the date changed over time as I gathered more information. Every time I changed the estimated date & time, the file name changed and that impacted backups and created more "opportunities" to mess up. For me it worked best to just use a reel or film-based system which I marked the originals with as well. Date and time are maintained in the appropriate meta data field. That sorts them correctly in the timeline which is important to me.

Interesting. It's normally Windows' job to hide the tooltip before another dialog opens. Maybe not. Maybe a bug. Who knows.
I have added an explicit "HideThumbnail() call before each button press is handled.
Not a really bad bug, but then, first broken window and all that...

Impressive. Keep in mind to switch to a larger image size when the object in the image is quite small - this gives the AI more pixels to work with. Costs a bit more, though.

I have also been playing with the Gemini Lite models for my bird photography and it is EXCELLENT at identifying and describing the birds. The ability to take the AI keywords and map them to the thesaurus and only file the hierarchical keywords is a big time save for me. Game changer.... Well done Mario!

Example Images fed in (keywords were not present already):

One more for good measure.. looks like a Willet right?  But, notice the legs are yellow and not blue/green.... will the AI get it right?

Bingo! Amazing...

AI|Wildlife; Animals|Bird; Aquatic; Grey; Habitat; Long Beak; Migration; Objects|Water; Ornithology; Places|Nature; Shorebird; Shoreline; Spotted; Wading; Yellow Legs

The bird in the image appears to be a Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes). This medium-sized shorebird is characterized by its long, slender, bright yellow legs and a slightly upturned, straight black beak. It has a greyish-brown back and wings, with a white belly.  Lesser Yellowlegs are commonly found in wetlands, marshes, and along coastlines, particularly during migration. They primarily feed on insects, small crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates, which they forage for in shallow water. During the breeding season, they nest in boreal forests of North America. They are known for their call, a distinctive series of two to four clear, whistled notes.

Another minor issue found with the Autotagger preferences...

1 - open preferences and choose Autotagger Tab
2 - Choose an AI with settings and click the Options button for Description, Keywords or Landmarks

Notice a phantom "Options" button appears then disappears?

Looks like the overlay/hover help for the button is still appearing after you click the button.  You need to be fast so the hover doesn't appear and go away before clicking the button.

Sorry for the spelling! I must have been tired :-)
I wanted to correct it but it seems closed for editing now.

I will add a few examples later so you get a hint about how good these improvements in Gemini 2.0 Flash Lite really are.

OSM is especially good for hikers, cyclists and "the wild".
