Hello

I've got a few permanent pending write backs on the tag xmp\ModifyDate.
It concerns recent smartphone pictures, and i can't get rid of the write back even when i modify and write the picture comment for instance.

Looking at the output panel, i have :
Warning: Duplicate MakerNoteUnknownText tag in ExifIFD
Listing metadatas, i have :
[ExifIFD]       Maker Note Unknown Text         : I
[ExifIFD]       Maker Note Unknown Text         : ##**rptoz
[ExifIFD]       Maker Note Unknown Text         : Auto

Any help welcome !

Mario

It would be helpful if you could upload a sample image to your cloud space and post a link.
Or send the image to me (with a link to this topic), see support email address
The warnings should not interfere. Does ExifTool report any warnings or errors in the The Output Panel after the write-back attempt?

Looking at the file, ExifTool reports:

[ExifTool]      Warning                        : [minor] Unrecognized MakerNotes

which means it does not recognize the maker notes and will refuse to write them safety reasons?
When I add a headline, title, keyword, rating and label and write back, the changes are written safely to XMP and the file is no longer marked as pending. XMP ModifyDate is set to the time of the write-back.

I wrote back 3 times. In the output panel I see

Warning: Error rebuilding maker notes (may be corrupt) - E:\data\download\community\15301\15301.jpg
Warning: Error rebuilding maker notes (may be corrupt) - E:\data\download\community\15301\15301.jpg
Warning: Duplicate MakerNoteUnknownText tag in ExifIFD - E:/data/download/community/15301/15301.jpg

Please open a thread in the ExifTool forum https://exiftool.org/forum/ and provide Phil with the link to the sample so he can have a look at the maker note when he finds the time.

OK ! Before closing, could you have a look at this sample : no errors but write back pending

I've had a look at this file. After indexing, IMatch Metadata Analyst reports

Warning: [System] File has unwritten metadata (pending write-back).<br/>The metadata loaded from the image and the data in the database may not match.
Warning: [EXIF] Offset TimeOriginal missing. 'Date Subject Created' may have no time zone offset.
Warning: [EXIF] Offset TimeDigitized missing. 'Create Date' may have no time zone offset.
Warning: [EXIF] Different EXIF orientation values. IFD0: 1, IFD1: 0
Warning: [XMP] [IFD0]:Orientation and [XMP-tiff]:Orientation (embedded) mismatch.

Normal, except for the mismatch in orientation between EXIF and XMP. This should not happen, XMP orientation and EXIF orientation are linked and must be in-sync.

The file has an embedded XMP record written by ExifTool version 13.31.
The metadata was not produced by IMatch but by a software or device identifying itself, not all to helpful, as VOG-L29 12.0.0.149(C431E3R2P2). No idea.

In the Metadata Panel I add a title and headline, append the term IMatch to the description and keywords and give the image a rating and label.

I write back.
The yellow pen comes back, with XMP::subject as the tag to write. This indicates that IMatch could not sync the hierarchical and flat keywords (in the file) during the first write-back. I write back again. The yellow pen vanishes as expected.

IMatch Metadata Analyst reports no problems anymore. All tags are written and in-sync between EXIF, GPS and XMP. Perfect result.

Which problem did you have with this file?
