Timeline Display Wrong

I've learned that if the Timeline Panel is docked either top/bottom, then the result is that it displays the years from left-to-right.  That's how mine is displaying right now, but I know that it is docked to the left side of the work space.  So, why is the display off?

Mario

I don't follow, sorry.

Docking the timeline horizontally is not something most people will ever do. And if you really do this, the timeline displays the latest year on the left, and then going down the timeline to the right.

Okay, maybe, my screen capture will help you understand.  As you can see, the years are all displayed from left-to-right, whereas before, they were from top-to-bottom.  How do I get it back that way?

Just drag the timeline to the left of the workspace (or, rather, the screen) again until a blue shadow appears verticallay. Your screenshot shows a (collapsed) VarToy on the left side, so I assume your Timeline is still oriented horizontally.

Thorsten, thanks for your reply.  I have already verified that what you suggest, I have already done.  The blue shadow is indeed on the left side, appearing as a blue image in portrait-mode.  So, can't figure out why I'm getting this behavior.

I thought you were wondering about the sequence in which the years are displayed.

Or do you just want to dock the timeline vertically again...?

In that case, check out Moving, Docking and Floating Panels and the Using IMatch Panels and Workspaces tutorial video in the IMatch Learning Center.

QuoteI thought you were wondering about the sequence in which the years are displayed.
In fact, the order in which the years are sorted (ascending or descending) is configurable through Settings > Show current year on top. This works also if the timeline is docked horizontally.

But I think Darius1968 tries to get the timeline back to vertically docked. This also works for me just by dragging the Timeline to the left side, no problem. But from the screenshot it looks like a very peculiar layout with lots of hidden and docked/undocked panels on a relatively small screen. Maybe it is just a question of where the panel is dragged to?

As explained in the help and shown in the tutorial video (see links above) the UI toolkit indicates where the panel is docked while you dragging it. Just place the mouse into the appropriate section and let go.

I know about what is explained in the Help about this topic.  It's had for me to get a screen shot while I'm in dragging mode with my mouse, but yes, I am taking care to make sure that the blue indicator says that I have the panel docked to the left side and still, I'm getting the sorting in this fashion.

Mario

"Sorting in this fashion"....

There are only two modes: ascending and descending. You can choose via the Timeline Options (toolbar button).

Should have said sorting in this format, instead of sorting in this fashion.  I meant to say that even though I took care to make sure that the Timeline Panel was docked horizontally, left-side, still, the enumeration of the years is laid out left-to-right, instead of top-to-bottom, as is the case for both, the Media & Folders and Categories Panels.

I think if you narrow the panel it will switch to top-to-bottom.
It just adjusts to what seems most (screen) efficient.

Mario

When you dock the timeline horizontally, the layout will be left to right. In vertical mode, the layout will be top to bottom.
It makes not much sense to to top/bottom in horizontal mode because only a small fraction of the panel width would be used.
This is how the timeline is designed to work. No way to change that.

I think, to take away confusion, we have to forget the notion of horizontal/vertical, and instead, just stick to docked on the left/right/top/bottom edges.  With this in mind, I've been docked at the left edge, which is the default.

P.S.
Ubacher solved the problem with, "I think if you narrow the panel it will switch to top-to-bottom.
It just adjusts to what seems most (screen) efficient."  I tried to narrow the pane a bit, which switched the mode from left-to-right to top-to-bottom.  Didn't realize this behavior existed.
