I'm a little confused about how the find tool in file windows is supposed to work.

I have a window with an assortment of *.arw *.jpg *.psd files.  If I type 'jpg' or 'psd' it only displays the corresponding files.  Ok, so far so good.  But if I type 'arw' it shows all the files not just the *.arw files.

Is that the expected outcome?

The simple search bar in the file window uses the built-in IMatch search engine to search the metadata contained in your files (selected tags). See the help on the search bar in the file window topic, and the topic in the IMatch search engine for details.

I think your files contain the word or sub-string ARW somewhere in their metadata records and this is why you find them. Check one of the files found in the Metadata Panel (Browser layout).

This search function is not designed to search for file extensions, it searches all metadata (or searches only in the tag groups you specify).

To see only files for specific formats, use the File Format Filter.
