Pack & Go Restore skipped many files
« on: April 15, 2014, 04:11:31 PM »
I did a successful Pack on my main system, then attempted to restore on my mobile system (Acer laptop).  The retore apparently was successful, but the profile showed that a lot had been skipped.  The profile text is attached.  It appears that access has been denied to a Program Data folder on the laptop.  (Pack & Go backup was on the D drive).

On the laptop, IM5 opens the restored database, but my my settings are of course incorrect.

Check the file system privileges. IMatch is unable to write to

C:\ProgramData\photools.com\IMatch5

and it's sub-folders. Try running Pack & Go elevated, or give your user account write privileges.

Thanks, but, sorry, I now have to display my ignorance.

Check the file system privileges - How?

Try running Pack & Go elevated - what does this mean?

give your user account write privileges - I am administrator as well as user, so should I not have 'write privileges' ?

Right-click the folder I mentioned in Windows Explorer, then choose Properties. In the dialog, switch to the "Security" tab.
This shows you if the user under which you run IMatch has write-access to that folder. If not, add the user and make sure he has write access.

Details are in the Windows help (but hard to read) and everywhere on the web.

Thanks.  I am shown in the security tab as both user and administrator.

What does running Pack & Go elevated mean?  I have looked at the help topic.

I have tried restore again on the laptop, with the same result.

Right click on "IMPackAndGo5.exe" and choose "run as administrator". Even when your user account is in the administrator group, it might not have all needed rights. They should be granted by elevating its right by using "run as administrator".

But have you write privileges to this folder, and all sub-folders, and the files in these sub-folders?
According to the P&G log file, you don't. Windows returns "access denied" to P&G.

Running as Administrator seems to have solved this.  But could you please say whether all preferences should be restored too?  For instance, I find that the Slide Show file tips  in the restored version are just the basic "out of the box" data. not the same as those in the original.

Slide show settings are stored "per-user"/"per-computer". The assumption (for safety) is that running IMatch on a another computer usually also means other screen size or resolution and other differences. Hence the slide show (like almost all display-related settings) are stored "per computer".

Thank you Mario.  Is there any way "per computer settings", such as slide show can be saved?  If not, this would be a feature request.  It is a real bore having to repeat these settings.  I realise some things can be saved, but not all preference settings.

All preferences a are saved automatically, globally, per user, per computer or in combinations thereof - it all depends on the type of setting. IMatch has now nearly 350 settings to maintain.

If you a) regularly change slide show settings and b) need to transfer them also regularly to another computer, you can add a feature request to export slide show settings separately in the feature request board.

I will bear that in mind as a possible request in the future, depending on usage.
