Cusor control in file window

I spend a lot of time repositioning the cursor (slider) in the file window as it doesn't stay where I put it. It often jumps to some random location. How do I get it to stay put?

Which slider do you mean? The scroll bar used to scroll through the files, the slider used to change the thumbnail size...?
Which View are you in? What are you doing? We need a few more details. Maybe include a screen shot in JPG format so we see what you see.

My confusion was due to being in the hierarchical mode in the File Window. I have now learned to navigate the hierarchical mode by paying attention to the path shown in the Caption Bar and by selecting a file in the level I want to work in. Thanks for the help!
