I am trying to delete the default thesaurus & then import keywords from the database, but I get a 'too many files' error if I select 'apply to all files in the database' (about 34,000 photos) after trying to delete just one item from the default thesaurus. Should I be narrowing down the number of selected files? If so, what would be a good number of files to work on at a time? Could I then delete more items from the thesaurus at a time?

"Too many files" is just a warning and you can continue, right?

If you delete a keyword and you have enabled the option to sync changes you do to the Thesaurus, the Thesaurus will scan your database for all files (out of 34,000) which have that keyword, and if any are found, the keyword will be deleted from these files.
You have the option to apply the changes to all files in the database or only selected files, which allows for precise changes.

For the operation you are describing: deleting all keyword and importing from the database, enabling the option to apply thesaurus changes must be off (Click the database button in the ribbon). Else you could wipe all keywords from all files, since the Thesaurus has recorded that you deleted all keywords.
