What I did
- selected 8 files in the file panel, set the create date & date subject created - and clicked the checkmark ("V") to save
- deselected the last 2 files (ctrl+click ), changed city and location - and clicked the checkmark ("V") to save

result
- the first 6 files are updated correctly, but the last deselected file is also updated with the new location which it should not.

Tried to reproduce this, but was not able to.

What I did:
  • Selected 8 files in the "File Window".
  • All selected filed have the same {File.MD.Composite\MWG-City\City\0} and {File.MD.Composite\MWG-Location\Location\0}.
  • Changed {File.MD.XMP::xmp\CreateDate\CreateDate\0} and {File.MD.XMP::photoshop\DateCreated\DateCreated\0} for all selected files to one unique Date/Time/Timezone.
  • CTRL+S (Save the changes back to the database).
  • De-selected 2 files.
  • Changed {File.MD.Composite\MWG-City\City\0} and {File.MD.Composite\MWG-Location\Location\0} for the currently 6 selected files.
  • CTRL+S (Save the changes back to the database).

Result:
  • The last 6 selected files have the new City and Location, while the 2 de-selected files still have the "old" City and "Location".
  • All 8 files have updated CreateDate and DateCreated.

To me, everything works as it should (or at least as I'm expecting it).

Ctrl+click does not necessarily de-select, it just changes which file is focused. All selected and the focused file are considered when applying Metadata Panel changes.

@Mario: I was testing this again. When I have exactly 2 selected files with different DateCreated values in the Metadate-panel and I do Ctrl+click on one of the 2 selected files, then the following happens:

  • File-Counter (upper right part of the file window; number of selected files) decreases by one. This indicates that just one file is selected.
  • DateCreated in the Metadata-panel shows "(Multiple Values)". This indicates that still 2 files are selected.

One selected file, one focused file (not counted in the selection). The focused file must not necessarily be selected, which is exactly what you do with Ctrl+click. The MD Panel uses the focused file as the anchor, whether it is selected or not.  What are you trying to achieve?

I see what you mean. If I have a group of files selected, and I want to actually deselect the focused file, I have to Ctrl-click on that file, then Ctrl-click on a different file, which becomes the new focused file of the group.

Mario

Yes. If this is something you need to do.
Usually, you select the file you want to use as the "anchor" file for the MD or Keywords Panel last, making it both selected and focused.

It's not a bug, but a feature?  :)
How can I de-focus a file after I have de-selected it - without destroying my selection?
...or do I have to select the files again?

Mario

Why would you want to de-focus? Unless you click outside the thumbnails, one file is always focused (and usually also selected). And you need a focused file so the KW and MD Panel know which data to use for display/comparison.

Clicking a thumbnail selects it and focuses it.
Ctrl+Click toggles the selection of the clicked file, leaving the other selected files selected.
The only way to "un-focus" is to click outside the thumbnails to de-select everything.

To focus another file while keeping the current selection, just Ctr+click it twice. The first click places the focus on the file and de-selects it. The second Ctrl-click selects it again. This way you can "move" the focus around while keeping your selection.

And, if you accidentally change the selection, Ctr+Z or Edit menu > Undo will restore it.

You can simply Ctrl-click one of the files in your current selection, as sybersitizen described above.

As axel.hennig described, that file will become de-selected, but it will now be the Focused File,  And as Mario Described above, and in more detail in the Help:

Synching Metadata between Files

...the Fucused File is the basis for Synching (copying) Metadata via the pen icons in the Metadata and Keywords Panels (whether the Focused file is selected or not).

If you would like to have that file be both Focused and Selected, you could Ctrl-click it again...

Thanks!  :)
