I'm not aware of having changed anything but the maps panels is now showing. I haven't looked at the maps panel for some time and am only looking now to map images to a GPX track following a trip

"Oops! Something went wrong.
This page didn't load Google Maps correctly. See the JavaScript console for technical details."

instead of a map.

I can't find the JavaScript console referred to. A map image flashes up before being replaced with the message

Do you have a valid Google Maps API key?
Did you enter the API key in Edit menu > Preferences > Geo & Maps?

Sometimes Google invalidates keys. e.g. when the credit card used for the key expires.
Log into the Google portal and check if your key is still valid.

I've had a working API key for some while. If I reverse geocode an image it returns location details

I had set API restrictions to the three used for reverse geocoding (I think) but can't remember when I did this. Possibly resulting from recent Google prompts to improve security.

If I remove all API restrictions the map displays again

See this thread for information about API restrictions and a possible way to restrict APIs for IMatch:

Thanks. That post has more options than the last one from you that I read as it adds a web site restriction option.

A linked question. Presumably the maps panel is using my API key to display the map. Is there a potential cost associated with this (if Google start charging for that particular API)? I generally only display the Maps panel when mapping to GPX tracks so it probably doesn't matter either way for me, just checking so that I know.

Sure. See https://mapsplatform.google.com/pricing/

You might have a free daily allowance, depending on whatever free usage is currently assigned to your account. This varies over time. The had a 200$ free per months once, now they provide a certain number of free API calls per month. This also varies by country. For occasional use in a private scenario, you probably will always stay within the free allowance.
