From The Verge: We asked camera companies why their RAW formats are all different and confusing

Looking at the answers from the camera vendors,
claiming that proprietary RAW formats can do something DNG cannot: It's all BS.

The DNG format is an ISO standard and open source. It can handle all sensor data older and current camera models produce. Android uses DNG for RAW. Apple does so too, but as per usual adds their own spin to it by calling it ProRAW.

DNG can contain EXIF metadata, including the holy secret maker notes the camera vendors put all secrets into.
They can also put whatever they want into a proper XMP record (not just the usual XMP record with a hard-coded rating=none) and put proprietary data into a custom XMP namespace.

The only reason for using proprietary RAW formats is control. They want to control if and with which software vendor they share details under non-disclosure agreements (NDA).

Proprietary RAW formats are never in the interest of the customers (camera buyers).
