On Sept 1 I downloads the then latest version of IM 2020, bout only installed it today (Oct 16) without having first removed earlier versions. Should I now remove the earlier versions prior to installaing the latest upgrade?

All updates automatically detect and 'replace' previous installations. Settings and databases are automatically migrated, as needed.
No manual user action required.
Under very rare circumstances (I think, switching from IMatch 3 to 5.x back in the day) or when changing the installer technology, IMatch may require a manual uninstallation of the previous version. But when this is the case I make it very explicit in the https://www.photools.com/release-notes/.
