Half the time when I click on a photograph (in the thumbnail panel) I get a pop-up window titled "Edit Layout 'Titles, Descriptions and Keywords' "
How can I prevent this panel from popping up all the time?

I have the same issue.
Look under preferences - file window - result window.
There you can turn it off
For information about the simple layout editor, please see the IMatch help:
The Simple Layout Editor (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#fw_basics.htm?dl=h-47)
Go to Edit > Preferences > File Window. Scroll to the end and disable the option named Clicking into header/footer opens layout editor.
For a discussion about whether or not to open this editor when clicking in the header, whether this gets into the way and a (probably) missed chance for you to steer how this feature works, see:

I've asked users, we've discussed this, and the implementation is based on the results of this discussion.
I can only recommend to help to shape IMatch and to voice your preferences when I write these RFC (Request for Comment) threads. I write these for good reasons.

See other posts, esp from Mario, but a short answer is just to avoid clicking the top area of the thumbnail.
Thanks to everyone for your quick and helpful replies. :)
