Title: still seeing double entries
Post by: Joe Austin on August 27, 2013, 12:08:39 AM
I'm still seeing double entries in 'creator' and 'author' in the default metadata panel even after upgrading to .108, updating my language preference to neutral, and rescanning all folders.

How do you get rid of them?

I have tried removing them manually, but they return after the write-back.

Same problem here (still).

I need more info.
File format?
Sidecar or embedded metadata?
If the data comes back after write-back it comes in via migration between metadata formats, e.g. from IPTC or EXIF.
Send me one of your files (and include a link to this topic) so I can have a look.

Hallo,

I have many of these (even one quadruple author!!) with NEF. I checked with ExiftoolGUI, it is not in the NEF and also not in the xmp sidecar (I still have sidecars in some NEF folders).

Anyway, doing a CTRL rescan (Reload Metadata) cleared it = one author in the Metadata panel.

PS my Metadata2 settings: ignore sidecar and write to the raw

Mario,

The file formats involved are .cr2  (versions of .cr2 files exhibit the same behavior).

I have prefs set to use sidecars for raw files.

I am sending a sample of the files , and a snapshot of my metadata preferences to you at the support email.

Thanks for the file.
I could reproduce it and happens only for certain tags and only if the Metadata Working Group rules are applied.
I'm in contact with Phil about this and we'll come up with a solution.

Sounds good! I also see still those double entries...

These duplicate entries are created accidentally by ExifTool when it folds and merges XMP data with MNG tags it produces because of MWG compliance. This can be fixed by Phil only.

Phil just told me that this duplication is a side effect of a special feature in ExifTool which interferes with the MWG rules.
He will disable this feature so the duplication will not happen again once the new ExifTool version is out and included in IMatch 5 Beta.

Thanks, good news.

Did he  say what it will take to get rid of the existing double entries?   Will they disappear on their own?   Will the files need to be rescanned?   Also, did he give a ballpark timeframe for the new Exiftool version?

No. No. No.

If the data has been written to the file, you will have to manually remove the dupes.
Or just replace the files with their originals.

(Problems like this are not uncommon for a Beta, and this is why all users are supposed to work only with easily replaceable copies of their images).

You can keep an eye on http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ for release notes. I will ship updated versions of ExifTool regularly with IMatch 5.
