Title: Value Filter: Triple state checkboxes intended?
Post by: thrinn on August 02, 2013, 08:49:29 PM
Hi Mario,
in the value filter the checkboxes have three states: "not checked", "checked", "unknown".

For example, I have a folder with 3 pictures, representing three different combinations of EXIF Make and Model:
IMG_7745 -> "Canon" / "Canon PowerShot S2 IS"
P1010441 -> "Panasonic" / "DMC-FZ150"
scr008 -> no EXIF at all (it's just a simple screenshot)

I setup the Filter panel by "Hide all panels", then activating the first value filter. So I only filter by tag value.
Only the "Active" filter is checked.

The intermediate state of the check box is used to exclude elements.

Example:

Four files, labeled red, green, blue and <no label>

Value filter on label.

1. You check "red". Only the file with the red label is shown.
2. You check "red" again (intermediate state): All "non-red" files are shown.
3. You invert the filter. This produces a "not not red" => Only red is shown.

Mario, thanks for the explanation. So it works exactly as designed.
Maybe this should be mentioned in the Value Filter help? I will send a remark via the link on the corresponding help page.

In my opinion you are using the best approach. Although I am highly impressed with all the work that Mario has put into the Help files, I also see how it would be easy for him to not explain something well simply because he knows too much. Thus feedback from users during the beta will also get the Help files ready for the public.
