Title: Add another mode to link masters and versions
Post by: BenAW on December 21, 2013, 04:56:58 PM
A lot of users seem to use a naming scheme that includes the date and time the image was shot in one way or another.
By adding a second way to link masters and versions by filename, this can be used to simplify the versioning rules somewhat.

Below is an example of such a naming scheme as I use it. All these filenames have the first 18 characters in common.

20131224_1235_1234.DNG
20131224_1235_1234_001.JPG
20131224_1235_1234.abc.TIFF
20131224_1235_1234_version.JPG
20131224_1235_1234.JPG
20131224_1235_1234_print.JPG

I propose a Link via Filename, where the user only has to specify the number of relevant characters counting from the beginning of the filename.

I propose a Link via Filename, where the user only has to specify the number of relevant characters counting from the beginning of the filename.

I guess, if this proposal would be implemented easy, then it would be a good and easy one.
In my case also, I use date-time-specialnumber-specialletter-cliend-description.
Since my description can have different length, but always the same for versions, for me would be the "break" after 27 signs.

20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v1az.jpg

20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v2.jpg
20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v2a_z.tif

I would support this proposal, though I must say, for me the master-versions works fine, as it is now.
I think, one key to have a good master-version-system, we should simply add at the end of each filename a "sign" to show, from now on this is a version, hence this sign must not be used before, like in my case the

_

After this we should add some letters (a b c ...) and/or number (1 2 3 ...) or a combination of them.

With such a rule I could create easy a good system to easy search/see/distinguish masters and version with IM3.
But of course IM5 makes it even easier!  :)

In IM3 I used a small script that linked masters and versions in this way.
Later I switched to EXIF timestamp, which is even simpler and faster, but this might simplify the versioning setup for some users.
It won't resolve the ambiguity with selecting masters from versions though.

Yes, +1.

Of course it can be done with the link expression, but it is much simpler in this way, and also more selective. If one is not the king of regex (I am not...) one can easily define a rule more permissive than intended and catch more files than wanted.

The downside is that it is a per folder thing, the name pattern changes often depending on the subject of a series of photos.

Could you clarify how the subject of a series of fotos could change the naming scheme when using filenames based on date time?
I use yyyymmdd_hhmm_XXXX.ext were XXXX is the original counter from the camera.

As long as you have an amount of equal signs at the beginning, it does not matter, if the subject changes (if I understood you right). Like in my examples:

20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung.nef
20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v1az.jpg
20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v2.jpg
20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-beschreibung_v2a_z.tif

It does not matter, if the subect (so I think, you mean the description???) changes, it does not matter:

20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-two-girls-at-beach.nef
20130926-1512-600251-s-gou-two-girls-at-beach_v1az.jpg

20130928-1512-600333-s-gou-teapot-on-a-table.nef
20130928-1512-600333-s-gou-teapot-on-a-table_v2a_z.tif

Of course, if we use such filenames, what is in my opinion not a good filenaming-system:

teapot-on-a-table.nef
Version-2-for-teapot.jpg

124-two-girls-at-beach.nef
124-two-girls-v12.jpg

Here we have nothing, what could help us for finding with a clever system masters and versions.

But maybe I have missunderstood completely.

Support added in build 5.0.134.
