Title: Import IMCSX File Under User-Chosen Category Possible?
Post by: Darius1968 on January 12, 2022, 01:06:26 PM
It's made clear, that - via Import & Export>Category Export - it's possible to drag-and-drop any arbitrary selection of categor(y/ies) as well as any number of parent categories (with/without the child-categories).

But, what I'm less clear on is if Import & Export>Category Import indeed makes it possible to have any given IMCSX file be applied to a user-chosen category (the newly-imported categories to be under said category)?
Does the user get this choice?  Or, are the imported categories automatically put under the @All category?

I just wanted to be clear on this, before I go ahead with any operation.
Of course, I have - for safety's sake - already generated an IMCSX file (with the entire tree structure, under @All.  Complete, with file assignments).  Also, there's a database back-up.

The category paths exported are always absolute, never relative.
This means that exported categories will be imported into the same location.

The IMCSX format is XMP, user-readable and user-editable. Feel free to shift your categories around as needed before re-import.

Does this mean I can use Excel to edit the file, for the purpose of having my categories under a category I choose?

No. Use a plain UNICODE-enabled text editor or, better, the free Visual Studio Code, which automatically validates the XML in case you mess up the nodes.

For this particular use-case scenario, is there a better, more efficient method of importing categories (with file-assignments), but under a user-defined category?

No, this is very rarely needed. If ever.
Editing the XML file is simple enough. As is moving imported categories to another parent after the import, if needed.

My last question for this post (I think) is:  Is the color coding assignments of the categories maintained throughout the complete export/import cycle?  Will I have the color of the text/background maintained once the categories have been imported?

Color-coding options are exported and imported.
You can easily try this out yourself.
