I have a series of (sibling) categories that are all aliases. For "normal" categories I can manually sort categories using the Alt-key + drag, but that doesn't seem to work if the categories are aliases. Or am I missing something?

I've just tried and I can drag Alias categories to other locations (under the same parent).
Custom sort order mode must be enabled (Gear menu in the Category View).
What exactly are you doing? Which kind of category do you select as the "insert" position for the dragged Alias category?
Does the cursor always show the "forbidden" icon or only sometimes?

Custom Sort Order is enabled - and i'm moving under one parent. Moving (dragging) Alias categories over other Alias categories shows the 'forbidden' icon with one exception: moving the category to the topmost position (immediately under the parent).
The moment I have 'regular' categories (i.e. non-alias categories in the list, i can move alias categories here.
I guess that's because Alias categories cannot be target for a drop operation. You need to drop above or below the category, unless you try to move an Alias category into the "middle" of other Alias categories... is this what youi are trying to do?

Correct, the siblings are all alias categories

I have fixed that for the next release.
Alias categories cannot be drop targets, except in the case the ALT key is down and the user is rearranging categories.
