Title: Strange behavior on write back with workaround
Post by: rienvanham on March 28, 2021, 10:58:12 AM
Hi Mario,

I sometimes have a situation where the updated metadata can't be written back to the file. The pencil keeps coming back.

But I found a workaround: Close IMatch and restart it: then it will write the information and the pencil is not returning.

This smells like a (small) bug.

Rien.

Please provide a minimum of information, e.g. the IMatch log file in debug mode from a session where you did experience this. See log file (https://www.photools.com/help/imatch/#im_logfile.htm).
If the pen comes back, the usual reason is that IMatch failed to synchronize metadata during the first write-back, and metadata is still pending.
It then needs a second write-back to finish the process. The Metadata Analyst App can identify such issues.

Another reason could be that ExifTool fails to write to the file, but then the log file will show corresponding info and a yellow warning icon will be shown in the thumbnail panel for that file.

I have no idea how closing and re-opening IMatch can reset the pending state of a file, unless maybe ExifTool was blocked by the virus checker and restarting IMatch solved that lock. But then we will see related messages in the log file.

I will try to reproduce it and send the information.
