Title: WIC issue with Adobe Illustrator files
Post by: BanjoTom on April 01, 2015, 02:46:07 PM
I'm very pleased that the newest IMatch (5.4.2) told me exactly which file needed a WIC update.  It turns out to be an Adobe Illustrator file.  Now a very basic question: does the WIC needed come from Adobe, or from Microsoft?  Some quick searching on the subject of Windows Imaging Components doesn't make this clear.  It's not a huge issue, but I am left wondering where to turn to correct this.  Thanks to any who can point me in the right direction!

I marked this proprietary Adobe format as "needs WIC". I'm not sure if Adobe or MS deliver an AI codec pack, I suggest you check their web sites or ask their support teams. I know that the FastPictureViewer codec pack includes (at least basic) support for .AI .EPS and .INDD file formats: http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

Since Adobe does not publish details about their file formats (or, in case of Photoshop, first published them and then with version 6 made the format closed again) support for the many AI, EPS and INDD flavors around depends on many factors.

Hi, Tom

Ardfry is also offering a codec that might do what you want. Not free, but at least they have a 15 day trial version. Check it out here: http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec/  (http://www.ardfry.com/psd-codec/)

I use FPV, so I could test the offending AI file for you if you upload it to the forum.

I have very few Illustrator (.ai) files on my system.  If I don't seek out an appropriate WIC, what are the consequences?  Will it only mean that I won't see the .ai image as an IMatch thumbnail?  I can live with that . . .

Yes.
