Title: Modify EXIF Date and time - add warning
Post by: Aubrey on April 25, 2019, 10:52:35 AM
Yesterday I had to modify time on some photos adding 2 hours, I usually set my camera to local time zone but I had forgotten.

This went fine... but on looking this morning I had also shifted by 5 months and 2 days.... Easy enough to back shift but...

I had had photos from a friend a few months ago, and his camera time was way out so I corrected this, left over was that time shift. I did not spot this when I was doing the shift.

So perhaps if there is a value other than 0 in the Years, Months Days a warning message could be printed?

Not a high priority though  :)

Aubrey.

I had this problem some times, too. I forgot, that I had set the days before.
But I don't know, how can be IMatch more helpful.

That is the reason why I say if there are days months or Years other than zero then a warning would help.

we normally shift by hours or perhaps minutes

Yes.. I like this... makes sense since most folks are not shifting more than hours... thx.

This tool will be most likely be retired in IMatch 2020.
Remember when I explained about the Time Wiz app in a dedicated REQUEST FOR COMMENT post? If you have not read it, you maybe should.

Any comments?
I doubt that an extra warning would be needed, because you can see the resulting date and time (for the focused/anchor file).

Since you asked for a comment, here is my opinion.
The problem with warnings is they come in the way of users and require an extra mouse click. I think in a lot of the cases these warnings are annoying and at least I just hit enter without reading the message. I think every warning box should have the option to disable for the session or for ever.
While I do set times quite often, I mostly use a script or meta data templates.  I have used Geosetter in the past too. Rather than showing a warning box I think it just as you mentioned it's helpful to display the new time of the selected image. I think is not shown in today's function but it is in the new app. I also think it would be ok to reset the values every time Imatch starts new.

On a side note, do we really have to wait for 2020 for all this new cool apps? Is there any new underlying technology in that these apps will not run with 2019 or is it just bundling new features for a new version?

Yes. Many of the new apps use features only available in the IMatch 2020 engine / IMWS version. I currently concentrate on working on that major release, doing only bug fixes and small changes on the IMatch 2019 code base. IMatch 2020 has some other substantial new technology and features and requires my full attention and wit to get it done. I had to wait for the technology to become available - and its still all very challenging. But I'm 100% sure users will like the new features a lot.

Maybe another possibility: Instead of popping up a warning, would it be possible, for example, to put a red or yellow border around changed (i.e. non-zero) values?

That would make them more visible without requiring an additional click.

As I said, it would be futile to make any changes to the Modify EXIF Date/Time feature. I plan to remove it for IMatch 2020 anyway. And the Time Wiz UI has visual feedback.
